About 120 Iraqi Christians are seeking a safe life in Germany away from their nation. From Iraq through Syria, the first group of Iraqi refugees landed at Hanover airport while hundreds others are to be taken in by Germany as part of a resettlement program by the United Nations High Commission for refugees to 10,000 Iraqi Christians in Germany, Sweden, Britain, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands and Norway.
The group will spend two weeks in northern Germany, where they will be issued a three-year, extendable residency permit before being relocated to other parts of the country, and as long as they are unemployed they will receive social aids and salaries.
Germany’s Federal Interior Ministry noted that top priority refugees include in addition to religious minorities children, women and patients who are deprived from medial care.
Those seeking asylum were subjected to a complex application process. Single mothers, post-traumatic stress sufferers and those with family ties to Germany had a greater chance of a successful application.
Te arrival of further refugees from Syria and Jordan camps is expected including Christians and minorities within few weeks at the rate of 500 refugees a month.
