Iraq’s Tareq Aziz receives 7 years sentence

Monday, August 03, 2009 09:15 GMT
On Sunday August 2, Supreme Iraqi Criminal Tribunal sentenced Tareq Aziz, Iraq's former deputy prime minister and Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali," former Minister of Defense to 7 years of jail for being convicted of helping to oppress Shiite Kurds in the 1980’s. It is to be noted that Aziz and Al Majid are among a group of 8 suspects arrested for their alleged role in the forced displacement of Faili Shiite Kurds from Kirkuk and Diyala region during the 1980’s. These accusations also include displacing Faili Kurds, taking off their nationalities, confiscating their transferred and non-transferred money, using them to test chemical arms and exploiting them as human shields during war with Iran.
