SC strongly condemns Baghdad bombings

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 08:28 GMT
Local and international denunciations over Baghdad recent bombings are pouring in after death toll rose to 160 dead and 600 wounded.
While all parties condemn these terrorist and criminal acts aimed at dividing the people and sapping Iraqi achievements mainly ahead of elections, consensus has been reached to uncover perpetrators.
Similar to August 19 bombings that targeted Finances and Foreign Ministries, Iraq’s Government renewed its call for an international probe into the latest attacks. Thus, Iraq called upon the International Community to appoint an international envoy to assess foreign interference in the country.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hosheyar Zebari considers that Sunday’s bombings strengthen the need for the International Community’s aid in helping Iraq defend itself against violence.
US State Department spokesman Iyan Kelly affirmed that Washington supports an international investigation to evaluate the degree of interference targeting Iraq.
The UN Security Council on Sunday strongly condemned the twin car bombing attacks in Baghdad and "underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice."
"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the series of terrorist attacks that occurred on Oct. 25, 2009 in Baghdad, which caused numerous deaths and injuries and damage, including at the Ministry of Justice and the Baghdad governorate building," the SC statement said.
