Kurdish Parliament calls to contest poll law

Monday, November 16, 2009 07:59 GMT
Kurdistan Parliament called upon Iraqi President Jalal Talabani to contest the election law arguing that some of the law’s provisions are believed to be unfair towards Kurds.
Parliament Speaker Kamal Kirkuki affirmed that the election law’s Article 6, Paragraph 4, contradicts with Iraq’s Constitution Article 140 on disputed regions.
Kirkuki criticized the mechanism of seats distribution in Iraqi provinces according to the number of residents in each province.
The number of additional seats is illogical and unfair for Kurds, Kirkuki said calling to reconsider the number of compensatory seats which regressed from 45 to 8 seats in the present election law.
