Talabani and Maliki confer elections law

Thursday, December 03, 2009 08:17 GMT
In the context of the political activity aiming at approving elections’ law, Iraq President Jalal Talabani received yesterday night the Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki in Baghdad with whom he tackled the general situation in the country on different levels especially approving election’s law. After the meeting Talabani stresses that it is necessary to pass the law fast adding that delaying elections is unacceptable since it is necessary to hold the same according to Iraq constitution. The President, Prime Minister and Speaker have the right to extend the parliament’s term for one month only, Talabani added. However, this issue was not discussed with Ayad Al Samarrai yet. On the other hand, Al Maliki said that the elections will not be delayed because such a step would ruin all Iraq’s sacrifices for the sake of bringing the political process in the country to success pointing that the items on which the parliament is working were the core of the discussion with the president. Iraq Premier stressed that if elections law did not pass this time, there will be a parliamentary majority that would be able to pass it the third time.
