The US Embassy in Baghdad has condemned recent attacks on media organizations and journalists in the different provinces of Iraq and Kurdistan. The US Embassy called on Iraq’s central and regional governments to protect the rights of journalists and media institutions. While acknowledging and praising measures taken by Iraqi security forces to protect journalists during protests, the US Embassy stressed that protecting freedom of the press is a main pillar in all democratic societies. The US Embassy welcomed as well the statements of Iraqi government officials supporting freedom of press and expression.
