Iraqi-Kuwaiti issue is escalating as a number of Iraqi parliamentarians urged Kuwaiti Government to reconsider its call for war reparations due to Iraq’s invasion to Kuwait. Abdul Bari Al Zebari, a member of the Parliament’s foreign relations committee, told Al Sabah Newspaper, that the proposal of Iraqi Speaker Iyad Al Samarraie to turn compensations into investments was not welcome by most parliamentary parties which they believe that reconsidering compensations similarly to other countries is the best solution for this issue. Presently, Iraq expects a good will gesture from Kuwait such as alleviating its due debts following the example of other neighboring countries, Zebari said. For his part, National Dialogue Front MP Wissam Al Bayati considered Kuwait Foreign Minister’s statements as shutting opportunities of dialogue. Yet, he stressed the necessity to engage in broader talks with Kuwait in fear of straining bilateral relations mainly in light of the demarcation issue which might trigger a new crisis on account of violations on Iraqi borders in Um Qasr and Siba regions in Basra. In his turn, Coalition MP Qays Al Amiri noted that Kuwaiti FM’s statements and Kuwait’s insistence to keep Iraq bound to Chapter VII regulations hurt Iraqis and wrenches social bilateral relations. Moreover, Iraqi List MP Ezzat Al Shabandar believes that Kuwaiti FM’s call to keep Iraq under Chapter VII echoes as “announcing war on the Iraqi people”. These statements uncover Kuwait’s aggressive stand towards Iraq and its rejection to build up good neighboring relations with the country, he added. Al Shabandar urged Iraqi Government to act politically and rally international support to close off the issue of Kuwaiti compensations. In a related context, independent MP Ezzedin Al Dawla regarded Kuwaiti FM’s statements as insincere towards the Iraqi people. He underlined that Kuwait’s stand does not seek Iraqis’ ease while he stepped up the tone by stating that Kuwait is responsible for disintegrating Iraqi people and supporting unbalanced orientations in Iraq.
