Shiite rebels in Yemen said on Wednesday heavy civilian casualties had resulted from two days of bombing by government forces to their stronghold north of the country.
Fifteen people were killed in the bombing on Wednesday of an open market near Saada, a rebel statement said. \"We find ourselves compelled to defend the innocents who are being targeted by barbaric attacks,\" the statement uttered.
On Monday Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh blamed the rebels for a flare-up of violence, including attacks on civilians and government forces.
The president was \"pained by attacks undermining security, repeated attacks targeting civilians, vandalism... and attacks against security forces, mosques, schools and administrations,\" reports stated.
