Kuwaiti MP Ahmad Al Saadun called on Tuesday to question the oil minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al Sabah about allegations of smuggling large quantities of fuel to neighboring Iraq under US military protection. In written questions to the Oil Minister, the MP cited a confidential report sent by the interior ministry to the oil ministry that diesel worth 2.5 million dollars is smuggled daily to Iraq. The fuel is transported by large tankers through a border crossing for US troops in Abdali, northern Kuwait City to merchants in Iraq under US military supervision. Al Saadun did not mention whether the smuggling has stopped or is still ongoing, but added that it involved Kuwaiti companies that have export licenses to Iraq. The fuel was bought from privately-run petrol stations; Al Saadun quoted the report as saying knowing that fuel is sold in Kuwait at low prices supported by the government.
