Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that he would not stand in the Palestinian general election adding that this decision is not a bargain nor a maneuver, uttering disappointment for the deadlock peace talks reached with Israel.
Abbas accused Hamas party saying that the most dangerous incident on the Palestinian interior level during the last 5 years was Hamas sanguinary coup in Gaza Strip and thanked Egypt which exerted a lot of efforts all along the last years in order to reach an agreement. However, Hamas always used to foil the reached accord under trivial pretexts.
Meanwhile, Hamas Movement said that it is not concerned with Palestinian President Statements regarding his intention not to run for the presidential elections. Sami Abu Zahri, Hamas spokesman said that these statements constitute an admonition to his US and Israeli friends after they pricked him and transformed him into a tool. It would be better for Abbas to go back to the Palestinian people, to admit that peaceful settlement option is futile, to redeem resistance choice and to stop political detentions.
White House hastily commented Ababs decision. In fact, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs stressed that Washington respects Abbas a lot and thinks that he is a great and historical leader for the Palestinians and USA sees him as a real partner. However, Gibbs refused to comment the results that will follow Abbas’ decision and added that the White House intends to carry on working with him despite his decision.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seemed to agree on Abbas decision not to run for the presidential elections and hoped to carry on working with him in whatever post he is to take in the future in order to help him to reach his aims.
