Iraqi President Jalal Talabani praised the election law passage as a reflection to Iraqis aspirations. It points towards justice, national consensus and democracy boost, President Talabani said. In a statement, Iraqi President hailed the application and responsibility of parliamentary parties as well as their consideration of balanced interests that satisfy different parties. President Talabani urged synergy in face of attempts to sap the democratic political process. Vice President Tarek Al Hashemi rebuked however the amendment of the election law saying it is even more unfair that the first law. Amending the law contradicts with political conventions of Parliament when it comes to dealing with such sensitive legislations, Al Hashemi said. The first law he vetoed was fairer to Iraqis than the present one, Al Hashemi argued affirming that he will respond to the second law with total national responsibility as he did with the first law. Parliament Speaker Iyad Al Samarraie considered that if Al Hashemi vetoes the second law as well, parliamentary elections would be delayed till end of March 2010. Al Smarraie fears a new veto of the law, he told Al Sabah Newspaper for it will bring some great risks given that the IHEC is bound to stick to some measures that cannot be dismissed, Al Samarraie added. IHEC chairman Faraj Al Haidari affirmed that holding elections in January is unlikely. Theoretically, the law should be approved 60 days ahead of elections which should have been on Tuesday, he said.
