The UN Security Council (UNSC) has decided to expand the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon for another year without modifying its rules of engagement. The council members unanimously voted on Monday to renew the mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) until 31 August 2011. "The situation in Lebanon continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security," explained the UNSC in a statement while reiterating its condemnation of recent tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border. The council said in the resolution that "all parties" must implement the 2006 ceasefire, prevent violations and respect the blue line in its entirety, and to cooperate with UNIFIL.
