US Forces were engaged in the response to Sunday's attack at the old headquarters of the Iraqi Defense Ministry in Baghdad, a source from the US military reported.
It was the first reported such engagement for US forces in Baghdad since they declared an official end to combat operations in Iraq five days ago.
The American troops who joined the fight on request and provided cover fire for Iraqi soldiers were based at the compound to train Iraqi forces, said a US military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Eric Bloom.
Iraqi forces also requested help from US helicopters, drones, and explosives specialists, he said.
"The team was there, and there was a small security element with them, and they did provide suppressive fire," Bloom told AFP.
