Iraq’s first Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi resigned on Monday claiming that the presidency council did not commit to the agreements upon which he backtracked on his decision to renounce the Vice President candidature, a source from Iraq’s presidency reported.
Iraq’s first Vice President Adel Abdul Mehdi passed to President Jalal Talabani on Friday an official resignation, the source told Alsumarianews.
Abdul Mehdi expressed his dissatisfaction towards the performance of the presidency council after Parliament’s vote on Vice Presidents and the failure in managing the state, the source said.
Adel Abdul Mehdi had backtracked on his decision to renounce the Vice President candidature after President Talabani confirmed to him that the Presidency Council will include specified bylaws. However, it did not happen as agreed, the source speaking on condition of anonymity affirmed.
The source stated that one of the major reasons for Abdul Mehdi’s resignation is the fact that Vice Presidents’ issue was included in the present political crisis and due to people’s denunciation and religious authority’s dissatisfaction over Parliament’s vote on three Vice Presidents.
President Jalal Talabani received the resignation letter but did not approve it yet, the source said stressing that Abdul Mehdi will not backtrack on his resignation even if President Talabani does not approve it.
Adel Abdul Mehdi had declined on March 28 his nomination by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani as Iraq’s Vice President. The position became useless amidst stalling to ratify it, Abdul Mehdi argued.
Abdul Mehdi notified head of the Islamic Supreme Council Sayyed Abdul Aziz Al Hakim to nominate someone else for the position.
President Talabani did not approve Abdul Mehdi’s renouncement of Vice President’s position and convinced him of backtracking on his decision. On May 12, Iraq’s Parliament voted by majority on three Vice Presidents namely Islamic Supreme Council senior official Adel Abdul Mehdi, Iraqiya List senior official Tarek Al Hashemi and Daawa Party senior official Khudair Al Khizaii.
