Al Anbar provincial council decided unanimously on Monday March 11 to postpone provincial council elections until further notice, ascribing this decision to the security and political situation in the province.

“The incumbent provincial council voted unanimously today for postponing the local elections in Al Anbar”, said vice-chairman of Al Anbar Saadun Al Shaalan, in a statement to Alsumaria. He attributed “this delay to the security and political situation in the province”.

“The report issued by head of the Jurists Commission in Al Anbar Sheikh Raad Sulayman contributed in this step as well as the reports we have received from council members demanding that elections be delayed”, Confirmed Al Shaalan.

Al Shaalan also highlighted that “the decision was sent to the Independent Election Commission in Baghdad alongside the reasons for the delay and a petition to adopt this decision”.

On October 30, 2012 the Cabinet decided to set the 20th of April 2013 as a date to hold provincial council elections for provinces not affiliate with a region.
